L3 AQA Extended Certificate in Applied Science
Applied sciences are important as they enable science to be more applicable in the real life. Without applied sciences, great scientific discoveries may be limited as only an increase in human knowledge, which is important but underutilized. (Anon)
The UK is currently regarded as a world leader in sectors including renewable energy, space, low carbon, pharmaceutical, utilities, automotive, agri-food and bioscience. The Applied Science course offers huge potential and opportunities for those interested in working in the scientific industry.
Learners will cover topics such as:
- scientific principles associated with biology, chemistry and physics
- experimental and practical techniques associated with applied science
- the roles and skills of scientists, and the public and media perception of science
- how the human body works
- scientific investigations.
In the first year you will take three units - a written exam, a second written exam with pre-release material and an internally assessed assignment. The second year will see you sit another written exam and two internally assessed units.
What could this qualification lead to?
This qualification is supported by a range of universities, and taken alongside other qualifications it can fulfil the entry requirements for a number of science-related higher education courses, including biomedical, forensic and sports science, as well as nursing. In addition, the qualification is eligible for UCAS points
Automatic entry onto Level 3 courses includes students achieving 5 x A*-C or equivalent at GCSE alongside a grade 5 or above in both English and Mathematics. Students with either English and/or Mathematics at grade 4 or below will have individual meetings to determine the most suitable pathway within sixth form.
